Age spots are usually harmless  consequences of sun damage. But the appearance of age spots can be reduced or even eliminated with treatments.

Causes:

-Frequent or intense exposure to the sun or tanning beds

-fair skin

-familhy history of age spots

Prevention:

-wear preventive clothing outdoors

-apply sunscreen of atleast spf 15, 30 minutes before going outdoors

When to see a doctor:

Because age spots resemble melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, let your doctor check your new spots if they are, darkly pigmented, or have an unusual combination of colors, increasing in size and/or irregular shaped.

Treatments:

-OTC fade creams, although it may take longer in time to fade out the spots. Look for products with Hydroquinone, glycolic acid, or kojic acid

-products containing retinoids, vitamin A derivatives that accelerate the defoliation of skin.

-chemical peels

Acne is no fun for adolescents, most of whom develop at least an occasional pimple.  But acne can be devastating for adults. Acne can redevelop in your later years, or even make its first appearance. Either way, we don’t want them!

There are 2 types of adult acne:

-Persistant acne: lasts in your mid 20s, often inflamed with lesions.

-Late-onset acne: even after having clear skin as an adolescent, you can develop your first acne as an adult. It can be as severe as persistant acne, or mild.

No matter how old you are, acne results when oil glands in your skin secrete too much sebum, a natural moisturizer you start producing in puberty. When your pores become clogged with excessive amounts of sebum and skin cells, it fosters the growth of infection causing bacteria. Pimples, nodules and cysts form as your immune system attacks the infection.

Adult acne is more difficult to resolve than teenage acne, products that worked then can be too drying, you may need stronger medication.

OTC options:

- acne remedies with sodium sulfacetamide and sulfur

-topical retinoids, which are vitamin A derivatives

-moisturizers and foundations that contain proven acne fighting ingredients (salicylic acid)

If these don’t work, consult your dermatologist.

If you still have persistant or late onset acne, don’t despair. There’s no reason for this common and distressing condition to damage your self esteem. Today’s treatments are so effective that almost all cases of adult acne can be resolved.

We are used to protecting our skin from the sun, but what about our hair? The sun’s rays can definitely affect our hair.

Try some of these tips and you will subtly notice the difference with your hair.

Protect:

1. Wear a wide brimmed hat

2. Leave in Conditioner

3. Leave in product with UV protection – this can build up in your hair so use clarifying shampoo once a week to remove coating.

4. protect your scalp, if you have a favorite parting, apply SPF 30 or higher on parting

During Summer, salt water, chlorine and wind can dry your hair. Try and limit beach visits, swimming pools and outdoor activity with out protecting your hair.

1. Wet your hair with plain water before swimming to prevent it from absorbing too much chlorine and rinse again right after swimming.

2. Wear a hat or put long hair up to avoid wind damage.

3. Stay away from lemon juice, alcohol, peroxide or other coloring tricks because they can definitely dry out and damage your hair.

Get your shine back! If your hair is already dry and frizzy from sun exposure, it is not too late to get it back!

1. Use hair repair shampoo weekly

2. Use a deep conditioner weekly. Cover your hair with a shower cap to let your natural heat penetrate the conditioner deeply in your hair. Conditioners with keratin, wheat germ protein, and jojoba oil are good choices. Make sure to condition ends well!

3. Apply a sunscreen laden leave in conditioner daily to protect your sundamaged hair from further UV damage

4. Limit  blow dryers, curling irons, and flat irons to prevent further damage.

5. Your hair color will definitely fade with sun exposure, a hair gloss and/or deep conditioning treatment  with your hair stylist can add shine back to your locks
